Deciduous Forest AnimalsAmerican Bald Eagle: the bald eagle is a very big bird about 30.4 to and 36.4 inches tall and its wing span is 5 ½ to 8 foot. The head of the bird is white, body is black, tail is white, beak is yellow and its feet are a dull orange colour. Survival skills: 1. The eagle can see 4 to 8 times better than any human can. 2. They have a bony over hang above their eyes which, protects their eyes from the sun and helps while flying and searching for food and makes it easier to go under water. 3. They have little bumps on the bottom of their feet which helps them hold on to thing such as fish. 4. They have a very curvy beak which helps them rip apart fish. American Black Bear: the Black bear is black and has rounded ears, a short stubby tail and short claws which help them with climbing. The bear is usually 5-6 feet long and 32-38 inches wide. The bear can run up to 25 miles per hour and weighs 220-594 pounds. Survival skills: 1. It has shaggy fur which helps it keep warm in winter 2. Its claws are just the right length that helps it climb trees 3. It hibernates in winter so it can avoid finding food Coyote: the coyote has grayish tanned fur, long pointed nose and large ears. It can weigh from 15 to 44 lbs. and there bodies 30 to 40 inches long. Survival skills: 1. They have a great sense of smell which helps them detect prey 2. They have really good hearing 3. They are great hunters Eastern Chipmunk: the chipmunk is a brownish red colour, its head has two white stripes above and below its eyes, has five black stripes going down its back, it has short rounded ears. It is about 5-6 inches long weighing about 3 ounces. Survival skills: 1. Hibernate but not for very long White-tailed Deer: the deer has a grayish colour fur in the winter and then in the summer more red comes through. It has a band of white fur behind its nose and in circles around the eyes and ears. Even more white fur is on the inside of its legs and down the throat. Survival skills: 1. It has protective colouring which helps it hide beneath growth 2. If they sense something is wrong they snort and stomp there hoofs to alert other deer’s of danger 3. When they run they raise their tail which is like a white flag which also alerts others of danger and gives the fawns something to follow 4. They have very good eyesight and hearing 5. Mainly use their sense of smell to detect predators European Red Squirrel: the squirrel has ginger- red brown fur with a white under belly and a nice bushy tail. Survival skills: 1. Strong teeth made to open pine cones and seeds 2. They have sharp claws to help with climbing 3. There red bushy tails helps it balance while climbing 4. They have larger ear tuffs in the winter and then disappear in the summer 5. It is really fast at climbing 6. When it is mad it will wave its tail back and forth like a flag |
